Gavaskar names Virat Kohli's replacement

Gavaskar names Virat Kohli’s replacement: The legendary Indian cricketer was vocal about giving chances to rookie players.

There is no hiding to the fact that the Indian team will be looking to test their bench strength in the remaining two ODIs against New Zealand. Given that they have already gained an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series, there will be no better opportunity than this for them to audition some youngsters ahead of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.

With India captain Virat Kohli also being rested for the remaining two ODIs and the T20I series, the team management having a slot to fill at the vital No. 3 will further aid their case in such a situation.

While India haven’t zeroed in on their middle-order for the World Cup, bringing in a new player might just increase the convolution. That being said, the same will be categorized under the label of a ‘good problem to have’ for the team management and the selectors.

Sunil Gavaskar, former India captain and the first batsman to cross the 10,000-run mark in Test cricket, has opined on the same, putting forward uncapped batsman Shubman Gill’s name on the radar. Justifying his selection, Gavaskar said that the same will give India a fair idea of how the teenager takes to international cricket.

“Well because the No.3 spot is vacant, I would want to give Shubman Gill a game, give him a couple of games and see how he fares. If he gets to bat, you will get a fair idea how he is taking to international cricket,” Gavaskar told India Today recently.

Originally not part of the squad, Gill was called in as a replacement for the then suspended opening batsman Lokesh Rahul. For someone who has impressed one and all in every platform that he has played at, it will be interesting to watch him bat at the highest level if he gets the opportunity.
