Iga Swiatek Matches a Roger Federer Record After Winning French Open, Making Her Part of Exclusive Group That Even Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal Couldn't Get Into

Iga Swiatek survived a challenge from Karolina Muchova to win her third Roland Garros title in four years. this also marks the Pole’s fourth Grand Slam title in total, counting the US Open title she won last year. With a firm hold over the World No. 1 ranking and four Majors in her bag, Swiatek has achieved more than most players hope to in their entire careers. Even in something as unpredictable as women’s tennis has often been in recent years, apart from a select few consistent players, it is safe to say that Iga is a special talent who is destined for really great things. And with her latest win, she has added another feat to her list of accomplishments that puts her in the same group as Roger Federer.

Swiatek had not dropped a single set en route to the final match of the tournament. And after the first set, it looked likely that she would not drop a set in the final either but Muchova had other plans, showing a lot of grit and determination to fight back and give fans a spectacle worthy of a final. Ultimately, however, it was the reigning champion who had the last laugh, winning the final 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. While she may not have won the Major without dropping a set, Swiatek did equal an impressive record that puts her on par with the likes of Roger Federer, Monica Seles and Naomi Osaka.

Iga Swiatek is matching Roger Federer!

Iga Swiatek’s latest Grand Slam title win has added her to a most prestigious group of players. Playing in her fourth Grand Slam final, Iga secured her fourth Major title which means she has never lost a Grand Slam final match. Winning four out of four Grand Slam final matches seems like a dream, right? Well, it almost is. Only Roger Federer, Monica Seles and Naomi Osaka have done this in the sport of tennis in the Open Era. Certainly not bad company to keep for the Polish star.

The fashion in which Swiatek went about her business to add another Major to her haul is enough indication of how the future looks for her. Expectations for her to keep this going will be high. And every time she reaches a final, she will likely be the favorite to win. If she were to keep this going, she might even surpass Federer and Seles in this particular record, but she still has a long, long way to go to do so.

Better luck at Wimbledon?

Roger Federer won all seven of his first seven Grand Slam finals. A record that stuns your mind until you realize that it would be 13 straight Grand Slam final victories for the man had it not been for a certain someone named Rafael Nadal. Talk about domination. But before matching Federer, Swiatek will have to equal another legend of the game, Monica Seles, who won her first 6 Major finals.

With Wimbledon next up on the tennis calendar, we will likely have to wait until the US Open to see if Iga maintains this record of never losing a Slam final. The grass Major has not been kind to the Pole, with her best result being a fourth round appearance in 2021. Given her form and confidence this year, we could see her run deeper into the tournament but a shot at the title seems like a stretch for now. But you can bet your bottom dollar she will get her shot some day in the future; she is simply too talented and smart to not be able to find her feet on the grass.
