As the name suggests, the UEFA Champions League is played all over Europe; and the final is always played in a different city in Europe. However, reports have now emerged hinting at the possibility of the event taking place outside Europe for the first time ever.

According to American outlet Morning Consult, UEFA have informed potential commercial partners that they are looking to play the final in the US. TEAM Marketing AG, who represent the commercial interests of UEFA, have told potential partners and media rights holders of their intentions to play the game outside of Europe and are targeting New York as the location, the report cites those in the know stating the Metlife stadium as the ‘preferred venue’.
The current final will be held in Istanbul Turkey, their first final since the miracle in Istanbul back in 2005. The next 3 finals have also been decided. St Petersburg’s Krestovsky Stadium will host the final in 2021. Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena will host the 2022 final. The Wembley Stadium in England will host the 2023 event.
While the reason behind the proposed expansion is understandable; football is a business after all, something has to be made of Europe’s biggest domestic game being played across the pond.
