Thibaut Courtois is a step closer to Real Madrid move.

Since the last four seasons, especially after the exit of Iker Casillas, Real Madrid have thought about bringing in a big name in their goalkeeping ranks. The likes of David De Gea, Allison Becker and Thibaut Courtois have all been on their shortlist.

However, no deal in concrete terms has been struck since De Gea’s transfer failed in summer 2015 after a major fax machine issue in the Spanish capital. In the meantime, Kiko Casilla and Keylor Navas have both done very well to hold on to their positions.

Julen Lopetegui’s appointment, however, could see significant change at the No.1 position at Real Madrid.

The Whites now have Thibaut Courtois on their radar, after eliminating David De Gea and Allison from their initial three men shortlist. The Belgian shot stopper has already been in Madrid for 3 seasons, playing for Real’s arch rivals in Atletico Madrid for that duration.

Courtois has repeatedly spoken about his desire to return to Madrid as that is where his family stays. Chelsea are anyway behind Allison from AS Roma, which could signal Courtois’ departure. Meanwhile, Antonio Conte’s sacking by the club could also lead to Courtois forcing for a move out.

After the World Cup third-place match, Courtois spoke about his future at the club.

“Now I’m going to talk to my agent to see what the possibilities are. All options are open for me. I may also stay at Chelsea.

“People always complain that players don’t comply with their contracts, but maybe they do. I don’t think they will keep someone with my qualities on the bench, even if I don’t sign [a new contract].

“But maybe [staying] is possible, because I like it in London,” said Courtois.

The Blues will reportedly ask for 50 million euros for the Belgian goalkeeper.

Belgian media outlet “Het Laastle Nieuws” has stated that the keeper’s agents are in advanced talks with Real Madrid and personal terms could be agreed as early as next week. The 26 year old will be offered a five year contract by Real Madrid and an annual salary of 11 million euros.
