During the second day of the second Test of the ongoing West Indies’ tour of India at Hyderabad, Indian opener Prithvi Shaw raced his way to a half-century, providing a whirlwind start to India in their first innings.

After dismissing West Indies for 311 in 101.4 overs, Indian openers in Lokesh Rahul and Prithvi Shaw made their way out to the middle. On the third ball which he faced from Shannon Gabriel, continuing on his from the first Test at Rajkot, Shaw punched a short delivery through the point region for his first boundary.

Against the new ball, Shaw followed his first boundary with more dominating shots. A cover drive and an uppish flick on the leg-side were evident that he has the range of shots against the new ball. The range along with proper execution was a key in Shaw’s innings. today.

While his senior partner in Rahul was finding it tough to get going, Shaw appeared to be batting against a different attack altogether. To counter Shaw’s attacking instincts, Jason Holder introduced spin in the form of Jomel Warrican in the sixth over itself.

In Warrican’s second over and eighth of the innings, Shaw hit him for three consecutive boundaries to further up the ante.

On the first delivery of the 11th over, in a bid to cut a ball with minimal width, Shaw ended up hitting it to Shai Hope at first slip. In which was a sharp chance for the fielder, he ended giving a reprieve to the Indian openers.

With a single to long-on off Warrican, Shaw eventually completed his half-century on the second delivery of the 14th over. The 18-year old right-hand batsmen took just 39 balls to complete the milestone.

At lunch, India are at 80-1 in 16 overs, with Shaw (52) and Cheteshwar Pujara (9) batting in the middle. Read some of the recent Twitter reactions on Shaw’s innings below:
