During the 42nd match of the ongoing 12th season of the Indian Premier League between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kings XI Punjab at Bengaluru, Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Kings XI Punjab by 17 runs to register their fourth IPL 2019 victory.
Chasing a 203-run target, Punjab opening batsmen in Lokesh Rahul and Chris Gayle provided the visitors with a brisk start. Matching each other shot after shot, the pair continually attacked Bangalore’s new-ball bowlers.
Despite Gayle (23) getting out in the fourth over, a 59-run stand for the second wicket between Rahul and Mayank Agarwal (35) didn’t let the required run rate go out of Punjab’s reach. With both of them getting out within a span of an over, the visitors were on the back foot for the first time in their chase.
At this point in time, KXIP needed 95 runs in nine overs to seal the chase. Having scored only eight runs in the following two overs alongside David Miller, KXIP wicket-keeper batsman Nicholas Pooran broke hell against RCB all-rounder Washington Sundar.
Post hitting Sundar for three sixes in one over, Pooran then targeted the next spinner in Moeen Ali, hitting him for a couple of sixes. Having brought the equation down to needing 47 runs in four over, the match had turned into an intriguing encounter.
Royal Challengers fast bowler Umesh Yadav giving away just six runs in the 18th over brought back the hosts into the match. With KXIP requiring 30 runs in the last two overs, they lost Miller (24) and Pooran (46) in the penultimate over to lose track of the chase. Punjab eventually scored 185/7 in 20 overs.
