It’s done and dusted. And what a match we have had to end the league stage of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. South Africa finally lived up to their expectations and exhibited amazing character under pressure to outplay the Australians and defeat them by 10 runs at the Old Trafford stadium in Manchester.
With this, Australia manage to finish second on the points table below India, who earlier beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets at Headingley, Leeds.
Chasing a total of 325 runs for victory, Australia were reduced to 119/4 after 24 overs at one point in the second innings. But, the man in sublime form- David Warner (122 off 117) along with the later heroics by the wicket-keeper batsman Alex Carey (85 off 69) made sure that the Aussies didn’t go down without a fight, playing truly akin the defending World champions.
South Africa finish 7th
It has been an unforgettable tournament for South Africa right since their loss against England in the tournament opener to bowing down against comparatively weaker teams like Bangladesh. But, they would for sure draw inspiration with a final spirited performance against Aussies-who had lost just a single match against the eventual table-toppers India.
With this victory, they also give a perfect send-off to the two stalwarts of South African Cricket- JP Duminy and Imran Tahir who played their final World Cup match today.
Kagiso Rabada was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas, as he picked up three wickets giving away 56 runs in 10 overs. Andile Phehlukwayo and Dwaine Pretorius also picked up two wickets apiece.
Earlier in the first innings, century from the Proteas skipper Faf du Plessis (100 off 94) and a brilliant 95 off 97 by Rassie van der Dussen meant that South Africa put up a formidable 325/6 on the board after the allotted 50 overs.
