Argentina are playing Iceland in the first match of Group D at Spartak Stadium.

“ICECOLD. ICECOOL. ICELAND!”

Beautiful moments in football are made more significant by those providing words to them. Adjectives on adjectives. Screams on top of the voice. Intense words. Words after words. Provide a sense of importance to the moments, giving an idea to how much it actually means to the players, the fans, the nation.

And Peter Drury, with those three words, complimented by mad celebrations of players and fans alike, provided that sense and idea to everyone behind the television sets.

When Iceland took to field this afternoon, almost ten percent of the nation’s population was seated inside the Spartak Stadium. The sound of the legendary Viking clap, which has almost assumed its mythical status today, reverberated the arena as Iceland made their debut at the FIFA World Cup.

From the first second, the legend of Messi was on show. A maximum of three players crowded the Argentine star whenever he had the ball on his foot.

Iceland soon went close, which was the first proper chance of the match. However, Aguero gives Argentina the lead. However, merely 10 minutes later, Iceland equalised in what was their first ever world cup goal, as Finbogason steered the ball from six yards into the net.

Argentina continued to dominate possession in the second half as well, and soon rewarded with a penalty when Aguero was fouled. However, in a major surprise, Messi missed the penalty.

Argentina continued to go close but couldn’t do much to go through as winners.

It was a fairytale ending for Iceland as they held Argentina to a 1-1 draw in what would be a historic day for the tiny nation.

Here are a few tweets from the match:
