France played Argentina in the first round-of-16 match of the World Cup.
Lionel Messi’s World Cup dream ended on a bitter note as Argentina were defeated 4-3 by France, thanks to Kylian Mbappe’s masterclass. The 19-year old won a penalty in the first half, and scored two terrific goals in the second as France reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
France dominated Argentina from the very first second, and Kylian Mbape’s pace was too hot to handle for the ageing Argentine defence. Mbappe led a brilliant counter-attack through a solo run, before being fouled by Marcos Rojo inside the box, leading to a penalty for France. Griezmann coolly finished his shot and gave France a 1-0 lead. Towards the end of the half, a dull-looking Argentina led the match through a stunning strike from Angel di Maria, who was left with much space ahead of him to take the shot.
Argentina dramatically took the lead early in the second half, before another French counter-attack resulted in a brilliant goal from Benjamin Pavard. Kylian Mbappe scored a brace to make the scoreline 4-2.
Aguero did raise with an extra time goal on a brilliant cross from Lionel Messi, but it was too little, too late for the Argentina side.
France will now play the winner of the match between Uruguay and Portugal, which will be played later tonight.
Here are some of the tweets from the match:
That goal is the first decent thing Di Maria has done since that chip for Man Utd vs Leicester.

Kylian Mbappe is the first teenager to score more than once in a World Cup tournament since Michael Owen scored one in 2 separate games in 1998. Mbappe wasn’t born then. He’s also the first teenager to score 2 in a match since Pele v Sweden in the final of 1958. 😳

Sums up Argentina: get back into it with two minutes left, and let the aggression go to their heads to start a barney.

Mbappe replaced by former Newcastle man, Florian Thauvin.
“Strange” says Jorge Sampaoli. “I’ve have started Thauvin, then brought on Mbappe with 2 mins to go”
