Germany played South Korea in their final match of the group stage.

The footballing world received a huge shock today as the previous year’s champions, Germany, were eliminated from the group stages of the World Cup. Germany needed a win to go through to the round-of-16, however, they were held by a strong defensive unit of South Korea.

With both the sides failing to score in normal time, 9 minutes of extra time was awarded due to big stoppages during the game.

Quite incredibly, South Korea scored twice, in  90+2 and 90+7, to deliver a shock to the footballing world. This was the first time South Korea defeated Germany in a football match, and quite poetically, it had to happen in a game which was a must-win for the team.

With this loss, Mexico and Sweden go through the next round. However, Sweden topped the group with an emphatic 3-0 win over Mexico in the other match of the group.

This was the first time Germany bowed out of the first round of the World Cup since 1938. The European heavyweights have never failed to make it out of the Group stage ever.

This was quite a shock because Germany were pipped to be the favourites coming into this tournament, having won the 2014 World Cup, and being in a good form. Germany faced an upset in their first match against Mexico, when they were defeated 2-1. However, they salvaged their World Cup campaign when they beat Sweden through a Toni Kroos winner in injury time.

Here are some of the tweets from the match:
