India all-rounder Vijay Shankar has become the latest Indian cricketer to face an injury scare during the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. While opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the tournament, fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been ruled out for the next two matches.
In a practice session affected by rain, Shankar got hit on the toe by a Jasprit Bumrah yorker. While he was in significant pain at that moment, it is believed that there are no signs of worry for the 28-year old cricketer.
“Yes, Vijay [Shankar] was in pain but it has subsided by the evening. Hopefully, there’s nothing scary,” a source was quoted as saying to PTI with respect to the extent of Shankar’s injury.
Shankar had replaced Dhawan during India’s last match against Pakistan. While him scoring 15* (15) with the help of one four in the slog overs saw him at the receiving end of criticism, him registering bowling figures of 5.2-0-22-2 saw people talking in his favour.
Shankar had dismissed Pakistan opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq (7) and captain Sarfaraz Ahmed (12) to bolster India’s chances against their arch-rivals.
While Shankar should take the field against Afghanistan on Saturday, India have Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant as potential replacements if they aim to rest Shankar.

Certain reports state Vijay Shankar has been injured in practice. If true that would mean Rishabh Pant will play Vs Afghanistan. Hope Shankar is ok #WorldCup2019 #RishabhPant
