Asad Gunaratne hilariously grabs stumps: Emotions had the better off the Sri Lankan batsman as the visitors sealed the series at Newlands.

During the third T20I of Sri Lanka’s tour of South Africa in 2017 in Cape Town, Sri Lanka had defeated South Africa by five wickets to win the three-match series 2-1.

Coming on the back of getting whitewashed 0-3 in the Test series, Sri Lanka winning the T20I series was a inspiring result for them.

Chasing a 170-run target in the final T20I, Sri Lanka thrived on the back of opening batsman Niroshan Dickwella scoring a quickfire 68 (51) with the help of 10 fours and a six.

Dickwella, who got out to South Africa spinner Imran Tahir in the 16th over, was replaced by all-rounder Seekkuge Prasanna. Being promoted up the order, Prasanna didn’t let an opportunity to shine go waste as his 37* (16) including three fours and three sixes sealed the chase for Sri Lanka.

Needing 11 runs to win in the last over, Sri Lanka were rescued by batsman Asad Gunaratne who hit two fours off Dane Paterson’s over. Having hit a four on the third delivery of the over, an emotional Gunaratne grabbed the stumps and started running thinking that Sri Lanka have won the match.

However, with the scores getting leveled, the on-field umpires communicated with Gunaratne regarding the match not getting over. It was on the following delivery that Gunaratne ran a single to finally win the match.

It was the then South Africa captain Farhaan Behardien who won the toss and chose to bat. On the back of AB de Villiers’ 63 (44) including two fours and three sixes, the hosts scored a competitive 169/5 in their allotted quota of 20 overs.
