Watch: Aubameyang’s night went from ecstatic to tragic as the Arsenal forward missed a sitter from 6 yards as the Gunners crashed out of the Europa League.

Arsenal’s hope of winning the Europa League ended with a cruel defeat to Olympiakos in the round of 32 of the Europa League. The North London side entered the match with a goal advantage. However, the Greek side won the match 2-1, putting them 2-2 on aggregate and handing them a 2-goal advantage to advance to the next round.

Earlier in the match, Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a sensational strike from a bicycle kick in the 113th minute of the match. However, Youssef El Arabi scored 6 minutes later to wrestle the advantage back to the visitors.

The match still had one last moment of drama where Arsenal could have won. With seconds left in the match, Aubameyang found the ball in his feet. He was only 6-yards away from the goal and only had the keeper to beat. However, inexplicably, he completely missed the target and sent the ball to the side.

After the match, Aubameyang confessed that he felt ‘very, very bad.’

“I don’t even know,” he said when asked how he missed it.

“It can happen but I do not know how I missed this chance. I was tired, I had some cramps but it is not an excuse.”

The result means, that the only way for Arsenal to qualify for the Champions league next season is by somehow finishing in the top 4 of the Premier League. Not an impossible task but an uphill challenge regardless.

They are currently 9th in the table with 37 points. They trail 4th placed Chelsea by 7 points 11 more games to go in the league. Off the teams in the top 10, Arsenal have the least wins and only Burnley have a worse goal difference.
