Barmy Army flies ‘Arise Sir Ben Stokes’ banner: English all-rounder was seen getting a lot of respect during the second day of Edgbaston Test.

During the second day of the first Test of the ongoing 2019 Ashes series between England and Australia at Edgbaston, England’s fan group Barmy Army honoured England all-rounder Ben Stokes with an “Arise Sir Ben Stokes” banner which was being flown in the air.

It all happened on the morning session of the second day when England were batting in their first innings. With opening batsman Rory Burns and captain Joe Root batting in the middle, Stokes was in the dressing room when the banner was witnessed passing over the stadium.

The banner was dedicated to Stokes for his heroics in the recently concluded final match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Stokes’ 20th ODI half-century had played a massive role in a cliffhanger of a chase. Remaining unbeaten till the end, Stokes ended up scoring 84* (98) with the help of five fours and a couple of sixes.

As far as the ongoing match is concerned, Stokes’ only wicket came when he found Australia co-vice-captain Pat Cummins (5) wanting in front of the stumps in the 18 overs that he bowled for 77 runs. With Australia recovering exceptionally well from 122/8 to 284/10, Stokes will have to play a vital role in the middle-order for the hosts.

At the drinks break in the first session, England have scored 38/1 in 14 overs. While Burns is batting on 19*, Root is currently at 4*. It was Australia James Pattinson who dismissed England opening batsman Jason Roy (10) in the eighth over.
