During the 20th match of the ongoing season of the Tamil Nadu Premier League between Dindigul Dragons and Ruby Trichy Warriors at Dindigul, Ruby Trichy Warriors opening batsman Murali Vijay surprised one and all with his left-handed bating stance against Dindigul Dragons captain Ravichandran Ashwin.
It all happened on the fifth delivery of the 16th over when Vijay changed his stance to play an Ashwin ball on the off-side. With Ashwin overstepping during the ball, Vijay refused to what would have been an easy single. On the following delivery (free-hit), Vijay hit Ashwin for an impressive six over long-on.
While Ashwin has bowled with contrasting bowling actions several times in the tournament, it is the first time that Vijay has experimented to such an extent in the TNPL.
Vijay, who opened the batting with K Mukunth, ended up scoring a sublime half-century. Before getting out in the last over, Vijay scored 99 (62) with the help of seven fours and seven sixes. The 35-year old batsman has registered scores of 81, 78* and 99 in the tournament so far.
Despite Vijay’s heroics, Trichy Warriors ended up losing the match as the hosts sealed the chase in the last over on the back of wicket-keeper batsman Narayan Jagadeesan scoring 105* (60) with the help of 12 fours and four sixes.
