Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer

With the tennis fraternity being subject to so many Fedals early on in the year, it felt like our ‘quota’ for a lifetime was done, as the duo were finding it tough to face each other in a tournament again. But thanks to Del Potro’s blip in the second set against Federer last night, we were gifted with yet another ‘Fedal, and one where Nadal once again started as the favourite.

Nadal was breathing fire ever since the US Open win and couldn’t put a foot wrong even against players who could/should have troubled him on fast hard courts. Federer didn’t quite seem the Federer of early 2017, but that is what Federer does, he makes you doubt him and then he puts those doubts to rest with a sublime performance. That’s just the way he rolls.

Federer dismissed Nadal  in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in their 38th meeting slamming winners and aces back-to-back which made it strenuous for Nadal to break Federer’s serve for at least one time in the ATP Masters 1000 final.

Federer received his 94th ATP crown by overpowering his long-time rival, Nadal in Shanghai. Federer broke the World Number one in the opening game of the first set and also broke his serve in the last game to pull off the title.

With Federer serving at 2-1 of the opening set, an unplayable forehand cross-court winner produced by Federer in a 14-shot rally played between the duo. Federer refusing to make mistakes and making it perplexing for the top-seed to grab some points, Federer went on to clinch his second title in Shanghai.
