WATCH: Zing bail hits Shannon Gabriel in the eye; survives threatening injury during match vs Sri Lanka

Zing bail hits Shannon Gabriel in the eye: The West Indian fast bowler got hit in the eye by a zing bail at Chester-le-Street.

During the 39th match of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between Sri Lanka and West Indies at Chester-le-Street, West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel got hit in the eye with a zing bail. In what looked like a dangerous blow, the 31-year old cricketer was lucky enough to not get injured.

It all happened on the second ball of the 35th over when Sri Lanka batsman Angelo Mathews pulled a Gabriel delivery to deep mid-wicket. While the throw from the deep was a direct-hit, one of the bails ended up hitting Gabriel in the eye who was near the stumps to collect the ball.

In what was Gabriel’s fourth over, he ended up bowling just one more over. It is worth mentioning that the blow didn’t play any role in him bowling only half of his overs. Perhaps, him conceding 46 runs in five overs made West Indies Jason Holder think of other bowling options especially in the slog overs.

After Holder won the toss and put Sri Lanka in to bat, the island nation scored 338/6 in their allotted quota of 20 overs. Avishka Fernando, who came in to bat at No. 3 in the 16th over, top-scored for Sri Lanka scoring his maiden ODI century. Before getting out in the 48th over, Fernando scored 104 (103) with the help of nine fours and two sixes.

As far as the West Indies’ bowler are concerned, Holder was the pick of them with bowling figures of 10-0-59-1. Other than Holder, Fabian Allen, Oshane Thomas and Sheldon Cottrell picked up a wicket each.
