The enigmatic starlet had a slew of options to choose from
Born in New York City during his Ghanaian mother’s vacation to the country, Yusuf Mensah shifted to England when he was only nine years. The set of events which unravelled from his birth till date gave Yusuf Mensah the opportunity to field his wares for three countries on the international stage.
And given his expansive skill set, the 18 year old was wooed by all their of his potential destinations. However, the Valencia player decided to opt for USA as his international side, spurning Ghana and England in the process.
Mensah Opens Up On His Switch
Speaking to US Soccer after revealing his decision, Yusuf Mensah divulged the reasoning behind his decision.
“The moment I decided to play for the United States came when my heart told that this was the country I wanted to represent and the best place for me to play was with the US players, so I went with it,” Musah said. “I was probably watching Netflix. Thoughts were just coming into my head because I was still trying to make my decision. My heart told me to make this choice, and I stuck with it.”
“First of all, I think it makes sense to represent the country I was born in. In the end, I think it was pretty clear for me to decide to play for the United States. The project that we have going now and for the future is so exciting, and it’s a great pleasure to be able to be a part of that. I can’t wait to get started.”
Mensah had previously played for England at the U15 and U18 level before deciding to turn his attention to the USMNT. The player is a fabulous addition to the USA side, one which is brimming with wonderkids, players capable of guiding the side’s charge as it vies to qualify for the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup.
