Pakistan and Afghanistan fans engage in ugly fight post former’s 3-wicket victory at Headingley | Cricket World Cup 2019
Pakistan and Afghanistan fans engage themselves in an ugly fight after Pakistan’s 3-wicket victory in a nail-biting contest at Headingley
The ‘mercurial’ Pakistan Cricket Team have yet again managed to keep their World Cup dreams alive as they beat the gritty Afghanistan side in an absolute humdinger of a game by 3 wickets at Headingly, Leeds.
The Afghanistan side yet again, akin their game against India fell agonizingly short of a debut World Cup victory in the ongoing edition. With this win, Pakistan have, for the first time moved to the 4th spot in the points table, pushing the Hosts England down to the 5th.
However, the excitement and spirit of the game was marred by reports of unfortunate clashes and fights between the fans of Pakistan and Afghanistan even before the match commenced. But, this was not all. While the cricketing fraternity arguably witnessed the best contest so far in the ongoing World Cup, a section of short-tempered fans, indulged themselves in the ugliest of brawls even after the match.
What exactly happened?
The fights between fans from both the nations emerge from the history of political tensions that have led to their sour relations for years. The point of escalation of the ugly side of relationships was when an unauthorised aircraft carrying the banner- ‘Justice for Balochistan’ did rounds over the Headingley stadium.
Since then, reports of all kinds of fights and brawls between the fans throughout the match were reported by people through the social media sites.
Post the match, a reporter inside the stadium had recorded a video of the incident and posted it online. In the eight-second video, some unknown local men were trying to stop both sets of fans, but the quarrel was going off limits.
“Big rioting has started in the stands. Bottles are flying across, punches flying and fans piled on each other. Everything being thrown. Security nowhere around to stop the mayhem. Rioting started after Pakistan beat Afghanistan in a nail-biting competition. Ugly scenes,” the reporter wrote on his official Twitter handle.

Here’s another video
Nothing like this seen ever before in a cricket match in England. Rioting is associated with football matches but the what happened in Leeds is new for the gentlemen’s game. West Yorkshire Police must review footage and prosecute the hooligans pic.twitter.com/ukq1JzfKur
