WATCH: Shreyas Iyer aims to learn from Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma ahead of India’s tour of West Indies
Shreyas Iyer aims to learn from Virat Kohli: The Indian batsman was vocal the senior-most cricketers in the Indian team.
India batsman Shreyas Iyer is eyeing an ODI comeback on the back of solid performances in the ongoing India A tour of West Indies. Playing at No. 3 for India A, Iyer might just be given the same position in the senior team if the reports of captain Virat Kohli getting rested hold true.
“This would be the first time I would be going there [West Indies]. It’s going to be a good experience for me. The wickets are a little bit like Indian wickets. That’s what I feel.
“The bowlers are going to be challenging over there. Hoping to feel more pressure because I tend to score more under pressure,” Iyer was quoted as saying in an interview uploaded on the official website of BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).
“I deserve a chance now…”
Having last played for India during the tour of South Africa last year, Iyer believes that he deserves another chance in the senior team now. In six ODIs so far, Iyer has scored 210 runs at an average of 42 and a strike rate of 96.33 including a couple of half-centuries.

“I deserve a chance now. It’s been a long time. The performance will also count in the A series [against West Indies A],” Iyer said. The right-hand batsman had scored 373 runs in seven matches at an average of 93.25 and a strike rate of 108.43 in the last season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer aims to learn from Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma
Talking about India captain Virat Kohli and veteran wicket-keeper batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Iyer hinted at picking the best ability from the three players in a bid to become a better player at the highest level. “If you look at Virat Kohli, he is always hungry for runs. You can see it in his batting. I want to get that hunger in myself.
“If you look at [MS] Dhoni, he is very calm and composed in pressure situations. Rohit [Sharma] is very talented and has so much time when he plays. He is someone who is totally different from other batsmen. The best seat to be watching when he played is standing on the non-striker’s end and watch him bat and I’ve done that,” Iyer added.
