Chelsea full-back Marcos Alonso says he is ‘happy’ under Frank Lampard’s methods.

The Spanish full-back fell out of favour after a run of games under Maurizio Sarri last season, but he could start as Lampard’s preferred left-back this season. He is thriving because of the freedom given by Frank Lampard to the full-backs.

Alonso told Sky Sports: “The first few sessions have been going very well,”

“I feel very good playing the way the manager wants with high intensity, trying to keep the ball, moving the ball side to side and giving freedom for the full-backs to attack.

“Of course, knowing that our main target is to defend but I’m very happy with how we’re working and looking forward to the start of the season.”

The 28-year-old is susceptible defensively and he was heavily criticised for the lacklustre defensive displays while the manager opts for a back four rather than a back three or five. That is the main reason for getting dropped last season, which helped the course of Emerson Palmieri.

He was heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, but remains likely to stay at Stamford Bridge because of the transfer ban. Since his contract expires in 2023, the Blues are also demanding more than 40 million to secure his signature.

With the transfer ban in place, Frank Lampard has been to sign one player this summer. Mateo Kovacic, who was already registered as a Chelsea player last season, made his permanent move to London after the club opted to pay 55 million for the midfielder.

The Croat had a good start to his Blues career, but he was forced to warm bench after the resurge of Ruben Loftus-Cheek towards the end of the season.
