India rakes in the medals at the Special Winter Olympics
Indian athletes have made the nation proud after they registered a record number of medals in their history at the Special Winter Olympics. (India rakes in the medals at the Special Winter Olympics) The Indian contingent had competed with over 2500 athletes from 105 countries.
The final medal count was 73, with 37 gold, 10 silver and 26 bronze medals. This was India’s best performance at the Special Olympics.
The Special Winter Olympics was held in Austria from 18th to 24th March. These games are held every four years and it consists of various disciplines such as Alpine Skiing, Snow Boarding, Snow Shoeing, Figure Skating, Speed Skating, Floor Hockey, and Floor Ball. “Our athletes have put in real hard work into winning these medals. At the games they also interacted with the other participants, finding a special connection, which made them very happy,” said chairman, Special Olympics Bharat, Air Marshal (Retd) Denzil Keelor.
“Our team of specially abled has truly embodied what SOB stands for- to keep trying and emerge triumphant despite the odds,” he added.
30 out of the 37 medals were won on a single day in the team events of Floor Hockey, Unified Floorball and Traditional Floorball. (India rakes in the medals at the Special Winter Olympics)
This was also a record number of gold medals that were won on a single day by a nation. The women’s team also bagged the bronze medal after they came third in this event.
The victorious Indian contingent will now return to India on the 26th of March in what should be a triumphant return for our athletes.
