Kane Williamson hails Virat Kohli: The Kiwi captain was wax lyrical about his counterpart ahead of the first Test in Wellington.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson believes India are the topmost team in not just the points table of the ongoing ICC Test Championship but also qualitatively.

Speaking on the eve of the first Test of the ongoing India’s tour of New Zealand in Wellington, Williamson lauded the whole Indian outfit’s prowess as a unit.

“There is a reason for it [India being at top of the table]. They have so many quality batsmen in their line-up and they have got a world-class bowling line-up as well. So, you certainly do not focus on the one single player and that brings us back to the focus on everyone’s team approach,” Williamson was quoted as saying during the press conference.

Kane Williamson hails Virat Kohli

Talking specifically about India captain Virat Kohli, Williamson considered him to be the best all-format batsman in the world. Williamson recalled both of them playing the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup for their respective countries in 2008.

“Obviously, Virat [Kohli] is the best, one-off, without a doubt. I have always admired Virat in a lot of ways. We have to go quite a long way back really to Under-19s and have played against each other in different competitions as well.

“Obviously in international arena, in the IPL and I have always admired Virat in a lot of ways setting benchmarks in international games is pretty obvious with his standard that he sets,” Williamson said.

After getting whitewashed (5-0) by India in the T20I series, New Zealand staged a comeback in the ODI series by returning the favour as India ended up losing all the three matches.

While New Zealand would be banking on their recent momentum, they would be also aware about them losing their last three Test matches in Australia.

Having won only one match in the Test championship till now, New Zealand are at the sixth position with only 60 points under their belt.
