Jurgen Klopp answers special request made by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard
Jurgen Klopp answers special request made by former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard after the Reds win a league title after 30 years.
Jurgen Klopp made Liverpool achieve something, which was never done before by any manager at the helm of Liverpool. Even club’s legend Steven Gerrard couldn’t do it during his playing days at the Merseyside club.
Liverpool won the Premier League title for the first time since the inception of the tournament, and to honour Klopp- one of the instrumental figures around the success, Gerrard said that he deserves a statue at the Anfield.
Rangers boss Gerrard said earlier this month in an interview with The Athletic that Klopp should have a statue built in his name to mark his achievements at the club.
He said: “To come to Liverpool when he did, get to the number of finals that he has, deliver the sixth European Cup and then deliver the first league title after 30 years.
“For me, someone like Jurgen should be rewarded now. It seems like in football we often wait until people get older before their achievements are fully recognised.
“But I know the owners of Liverpool won’t let that happen. When Jurgen delivers the league they should already be starting work on a statue of him.”
However, the German manager politely insisted that he doesn’t deserve a statue, while Liverpool triumphed the league. With the response to Gerrard’s request, Klopp further says it’s too soon to be comparing him to club greats such as Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalglish.
Klopp said: “They all got their statues when they were not here, right? I am not interested in statues, for sure not in my lifetime. I am the manager and we won the league. People see it positively but we don’t have to compare with the icons.

“I want to live for another 30 or 40 years so I’m not interested in statues (of himself). We don’t have to compare me with great figures. Shankly changed the club, Paisley won everything, Dalglish was a player and a manager, there is no comparison possible. It is not needed.”
