Lewis Hamilton F1: What happened to Hamilton in F1 today? What does stop and go penalty mean in Formula 1??
What happened to Hamilton in F1 today: Lewis Hamilton had a torrid race as he missed the red lights to make a pit stop. This happened after Haas’ Kevin Magnussen crashed, forcing the stewards to call on a Safety Car.
Hamilton and Alfa Romeo’s Antonio Giovinazzi, who also committed the same offence, received a 10 second stop and go penalty. Such a penalty mandates the driver to wait at his pit stop area for the stipulated time, and then head towards the exit of the pit lane.
Both Hamilton and Giovinazzi ended up last on the grid after their penalties. Hamilton, though, did extremely well to climb up the grid and end the race on seventh. To make this things better, his main rivals ended up with zero points after prematurely ending his race.
Hamilton spoke after the race, admitting his and Mercedes’ fault. He also expressed relief that Verstappen couldn’t gain from his penalty.

“Firstly, we didn’t do a great job necessarily with the pit stop. I just didn’t see those boards so I take responsibility for that. It is something that we will learn from.”
“To get seventh and still get the fastest lap is still good points and I definitely didn’t think that was possible from 26 seconds behind the last car. I will definitely take it and grateful obviously that Max didn’t score any points. Not a huge loss today.”

Lewis Hamilton high praise for Pierre Gasly
Lewis Hamilton also had high praise for the racer who won instead of him – Pierre Gasly. After the re-start of the race, Gasly put in a strong performance. He never looked in trouble from Carlos Sainz, who tried hard but could only manage the second position. Lewis congratulated Gasly for beating Red Bull, the team which demoted him to AlphaTauri.
“I need to say a huge congratulations to Pierre because that is a fantastic result for him. I have obviously seen what he has been through from being dropped from the top team and now he has beaten the top team.
“I think it is just fantastic to see him recover and to see him grow. I am genuinely really happy for him. My race, it wasn’t meant to be today but what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger.”
