BBL 2020: Cricket Australia to introduce ‘Super Sub’ rule in Big Bash League 2020-21
‘Super Sub’: The forthcoming season of the Big Bash League will bring back into play a discarded rule from international cricket.
The 10th season of the Big Bash League will bring back the ‘Super Sub’ rule in cricket as Cricket Australia has reportedly planned to give team a chance to swap a player in their Playing XI amidst a live match.
The move seems to be another of CA’s ploys to further increase the intrigue-factor in their premier T20 competition which is slated to begin from December 10 in Hobart.
It is worth mentioning that the ‘Super Sub’ rule was introduced in international cricket around a decade and a half ago. In what just didn’t work in a complex sport like cricket, it was scrapped within a year at the highest level back in the day.
That third ball to Jacques Kallis… 😵

Cricket Australia to introduce ‘Super Sub’ rule in Big Bash League 2020-21
According to a report in Fox Sports, BBL captains will be allowed to submit two more names in addition to their respective Playing XIs. At the 10-over mark of the first innings, each team will have the option of swapping one out of the aforementioned two players as their ‘Super Sub’.
Having said that, the same won’t mean that anyone from the XI will be allowed to substitute. For teams batting first, batsmen who would be batting at the 10th over or might have got out won’t be allowed to substitute. Only the batsman whose batting would be pending by the 10th over will be allowed to substitute.
For teams bowling first, only bowlers who would have bowled a solitary over will be allowed to substitute. Anyone with more than one over to his name wouldn’t be allowed to substitute in the match.
With BBL 2020-21 still a month away, one expects Cricket Australia to provide more clarity on the rule which will allure plentiful eyeballs throughout the tournament.
