‘Kyrie Irving’s media blackout story is false’: Net star responds to accusations of boycotting the press
Nets reporter Greg Logan confirmed that Kyrie Irving expects to take part in traditional media activities during the course of next season.
Kyrie Irving’s decision not to speak to reporters during “Media Week” is a one-time thing. The Nets guard will engage with the media before and after games and after practice.
The 28-year-old had released a statement to the press on Friday which had led everyone to believe that he would not be speaking to members of the media.
A note on statement Kyrie Irving issued (pictured below) in lieu of speaking w/media during NBA’s Media Week: it doesn’t apply to entire season, as Newsday noted. Clarification from Kyrie Irving regarding his media boycott
Kyrie declined the opportunity to do a media interview on Friday. But a Nets spokesman said it would be a mistake to assume he will not speak to the media this season. Irving’s publicist said:
“This doesn’t mean he won’t do traditional media. He has every intent on building a mutually respectful relationship with the media. This is his first attempt to communicate directly/effectively with the people who cover him the most.”
His statement to the press has the following statements in reference to this:
“Instead of speaking to the media today, I am issuing this statement to ensure that my message is properly conveyed. I am committed to show up to work every day, ready to have fun, compete, perform, and win championships alongside my teammates and colleagues in the Nets organization.”
“… My goal this season is to let my work on and off the court speak for itself. Life hit differently this year and it requires us, it requires me, to move differently. So, this is the beginning of that change.”
Irving has long had the reputation of an eccentric meddler who doesn’t do things by the book. Perhaps this incident will blow over in due course of time as he interacts with the press over next season.
