“You’re A Millionaire, I’ll Sign A Prenup Too”: $170,000,000 Rich Dwyane Wade Explains How He Convinced Gabrielle Union to Get A Prenup

Ever since the couple linked up in the late 2000s, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union instantly became of the most dynamic couples in the sporting world. After several years of seeing each other, the two celebrities decided to tie the knot in 2014 despite briefly splitting up the year before. With the NBA star worth well over $170,000,000 and the actresses accumulating a net worth of $40,000,000, the duo agreed to sign a prenup as a cautionary measure in case things went south.

D-Wade seems to have learned from Michael Jordan’s mistake and gone ahead with the decision of insuring himself financially. MJ’s divorce from his first wife, Juanita Vanoy, would result in him eventually losing out on $168 million (half of his net worth back then).

Entering his second marriage with Yvette Prieto, Jordan swore to not commit the same mistakes again. Before tying the knot with Prieto, His Airness had a put up divorce clause to protect his net worth in case the couple ever decided to split.

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union insisted on signing a prenup

With Wade and Union being on the same page regarding the importance of a prenup, the couple went ahead and signed one. The “She’s All That” star mentioned the necessity of signing a prenup. In an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show, the then-41-year-old spoke about protecting her “stuff”.

“The biggest difference between this and the last marriage will be a prenup — at my insistence,” she said. “When you have your own stuff, you don’t need to worry about anyone else’s stuff. So everyone should go into the relationship knowing, ‘I’m here for you and you’re here for me.’ And the reality is I’ve never seen Dwyane balance a checkbook, so I gotta protect my stuff. It’s the wave of the future.”

Almost 9 years into their marriage, even the Flash spoke to Shannon Sharpe regarding the decision of wanting to sign a prenup. In his latest appearance on the Club Shay Shay podcast, the 3-time NBA champ explained how he convinced Union. Further, the 1-time Finals MVP also revealed spending all the money in their relationship in addition to him taking care of his parents.

“I’ll sign a prenup too. You’re a millionaire. You got money, you work hard for yourself. What I don’t want to do is, if she decide to move on from me, she got 200 and I got 10. Because I been spending all my money all these dance recitals, all these games, all these trips, everything. All these people say ‘oh, man take care of everything?’ I do. I take care of my mama, I take care of my daddy.”

Even though there have been a few hiccups in their relationship, it never reached a point where they decided to part ways. Entering the 9th year of their marriage, and seen living a happy life with their 3 children – Zaire, Zaya (from Wade’s ex-wife), and Kaavia James Union-Wade.

How did Wade’s mother react when she was first introduced to her son’s ‘soulmate’?

Jolinda Wade revealed that Dwayne first introduced Union as ‘his soulmate’. With her son having just come out of a divorce, Jolinda was beyond shocked. And so, while stating that the NBA star wasn’t aware of what the concept of soulmates is, Dwyane’s mother berated him it at the time.

“I remember when he first told me about her, he said, ‘Ma, I want you to meet my soulmate.’ Yo what? Boy you don’t even know what a soulmate is. Protective mother, who is she? You just need to calm down,” said Jolinda.

Of course, later on, Jolinda gave her blessings to the couple after approving of their romance. It’s a good thing too, considering Dwyane’s ‘soulmate’ statement has been proven more and more right as the years have rolled on.
