“I’d like to congratulate Paul George; the Clippers might still trade him”: NBA analyst mocks his 5 year contract extension

Nick Wright mocked Paul George’s contract extension with the Los Angeles Clippers, hinting that they still might trade him.

Paul George’s trade away from the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Los Angeles Clippers last offseason turned a lot of heads. It was perhaps one of the most unexpected moves in recent offseason history.

Paul George had recently committed to the Thunder on a long term deal and claimed he wanted to run it back with Russell Westbrook. However, when Kawhi Leonard came knocking at the door, George immediately asked the Thunder to trade him.

George going back on his word to the Thunder and joining the Clippers, is a perfect way of foreshadowing what Nick Wright is implying.

Nick Wright believes the Los Angeles Clippers may still part ways with Paul George.

Paul George made headlines this past week as he agreed to sign a 5 year/$190 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Clippers.

This left fans in absolute shock as they believed he wasn’t worth that kind of money due to his abysmal Playoff performance last year. This contract comes in the wake of George claiming that he wants to “be a Clipper for life.”

Nick Wright took to his show First things First to discuss this news. He said, “I’d like to congratulate Paul George. He says he wants to retire a Clipper and with a 5 year pact, there’s no reason as to why i don’t see that he doesn’t.”

This was obviously sarcasm, as he continued by saying, “Hold on, my phone is ringing, that’s Blake Griffin texting. He plays for the Pistons now.”

Wright is of course referencing the fact that the Clippers organization claimed Griffin was their “franchise cornerstone”. However, mid season, they traded him away to the Detroit Pistons.

Will Paul George suffer the same fate as Blake Griffin?

This all depends on how much success the Clippers endure this coming season. The Clips head office has proven that they are capable of going back on their word.

If anything, locking George up on a long term deal makes him a safer asset in the trade market as teams who trade for him will have George for a few years. They wouldn’t need to worry about him being a one year rental.
