“I think we’ve understood what those issues are”- Christian Horner asserts that Red Bull car in 2021 has to be an allrounder.
Red Bull ended 2nd in the table this year, but still, they were astronomically behind the dominant Mercedes and Red Bull is planning to make improvements for 2021 to give a tougher challenge.
Christian Horner stating his team’s aspirations for next year claims that Red Bull’s car for 2021 has to be an allrounder to pick suitable results in every track they will race, considering it will be a long 23 Grand Prix season.
“I think we’ve improved the car significantly,” said Horner as per the Autosport, reflecting on the progress made this year. “I think we’ve understood what those issues are and I think that, hopefully, that can be further addressed as we go into next year.
“We need a car that performs at a whole variety of circuits, which Mercedes have been very good at producing. That’s where we need to be strong next year. We’ve got to be strong on all types of circuit, particularly with a 23 race calendar.
“But I think that particularly at a circuit like Abu Dhabi, to take that [winning] kind of performance into the winter is very, very encouraging.”
Not a start from scratch
With the pandemic ravaging the teams in 2020, FIA has imposed a chassis freeze in 2021, but certain amendments in aerodynamics are still allowed to be made.
Due to which, Horner has confirmed that Red Bull will carry 60% of its 2020 car into next year. “It’s not a start from scratch again. Obviously, a large percentage of the car does carry over,”
“But where we start in Barcelona [testing] in a couple of months’ time is going to be pretty much where we finish [this year] with the relevant upgrades on it.”
