“Nothing can go wrong when you’re leading with a Mercedes”- Helmut Marko when talking about Lewis Hamilton being the best performer in 2020.
Lewis Hamilton once again had an incredible year with Mercedes, where he managed to bag his 7th drivers’ championship title, while also playing a pivotal role in Mercedes triumph over Constructors’ championship.
The consistent results by Hamilton over the span of last year are the testimony of his brilliance, but Helmut Marko doesn’t seem to be too impressed as he thinks that one could base it on his performance in Turkey only.
“Yes, we agree”, he responds in an interview after asked whether he supports Hamilton being crowned as the driver of the year by Motorsport-total. “However, I base my answer only on the Hamilton race in Turkey.”
Out of 17 races, Hamilton managed to win 11 races, an incredible stat, but Marko believes that it is not something extraordinary as according to him, nothing can go in a Mercedes.
“Because we know that nothing can go wrong when you’re leading with a Mercedes”, according to the 77-year-old Austrian. he said.
Max Verstappen subtly said the same
The Dutch driver from Red Bull holds similar opinions as told by Marko above. Last month Verstappen said that anybody from the current paddock can win in Mercedes.
However, Verstappen on Friday also said that for him Hamilton is among the all-time greats to ever grace Formula 1, further making his stance highly diplomatic.
While Red Bull and Mercedes rivalry is further intensifying, there is also a build-up of competition between Verstappen and Hamilton, which is likely to grow in the following year.
Though there is no doubt that Mercedes has a superior car than Red Bull, but in all past years, most of the drivers used to win the Championship with the dominant cars only.
