“Peak Giannis Antetokounmpo is closer to Anthony Davis than LeBron James”: Zach Lowe’s insightful observation on Bucks star’s change in style of play this season
ESPN’s Zach Lowe surmises that a peak, championship version of Giannis Antetokounmpo is closer to Anthony Davis than Lakers MVP LeBron James.
Zach Lowe is possibly the most respected NBA writer among the rabid fans of the league. He shot to fame with Bill Simmons as part of ESPN’s Grantland program. Since then, Lowe has gotten his own podcast – The Lowe Post – which is a staple for many basketball fans.
This past week had a lot of new developments – not least of which was the James Harden trade. The Nets have now emerged as the de facto favorites to emerge from the Eastern Conference.
This move forces Giannis Antetokounmpo and his Bucks team to diversify their offense. The Greek Freak has not frequently been used as the roll man in the past. But recent developmments could change things up in terms of the Bucks offense taking advantage of the Nets’ center conundrum.
Zach Lowe believes Giannis Antetokounmpo is closer to Anthony Davis than LeBron James
On the latest Lowe Post podcast, Zach Lowe spoke about this purported change in the Bucks’ offensive strategy. They implemented a few new wrinkles against the Nets in their previous game, which went down to the wire. Kevin Durant knocked down the game-winner in a scintillating ending.
Lowe proposed that Giannis’s role will be different from peak LeBron in the future:
“Giannis last night set 36 ball screens. His previous high in any game for the last two seasons combined was 24. I think actualized championship-version of Giannis is closer to AD than to LeBron.”

Lowe is definitely onto something here. Both James and Davis have better jump shots, giving them the ability to trouble defenses from everywhere. But Giannis projects as a roll man better than either of them due to his stride length, handles and wingspan.
