The Italian authority has banned U-Mask for being “potentially hazardous to health“. The Carabinieri, the law enforcement agency for domestic policing and the Ministry of Health has ordered the ban of products by U-Mask. The official reasoning, as per the Ministry, is that the face masks are not medical devices and hence do not have the certification required.

What led to U-Mask getting banned?

The masks made in a laboratory in Bolzano were found to be “without authorization” by the carabinieri of Trento. The certification was signed by someone without the requisite degree or authorization to do it. This compelled the Bolzano Public Prosecutor’s Office to launch an official investigation. A second case has been opened in Milan against the Director of the company.

The U-Mask has been defined as “the first biotech mask, reusable for up to 200 hours of actual use”. As per, the Striscia la Notizia website, “the effectiveness of these devices would be emphasized in a deceptive and aggressive way, by unduly exploiting the current health emergency situation to induce consumers to buy the advertised product at high prices “.
