“I play as LeBron James on 2K”: When Kevin Durant hilariously revealed to Jimmy Fallon that he uses Lakers star when playing NBA 2K
Kevin Durant told Jimmy Fallon that instead of using himself while playing 2K, he reluctantly uses none other than LeBron James.
The NBA 2K video game series is often lauded as the most realistic basketball game out there on the market. Though many say that each new game is a rehash of the previous year’s edition with roster changes, NBA 2K remains to be one of the most popular sports video games available, alongside Madden and FIFA.
Its popularity has skyrocketed over the past decade, overtaking rival NBA Live by a significant margin. NBA players now endorse 2K far more freely and frequently than any of its competition. Kevin Durant seems to be quite fond of the game as he was the cover athlete for both 2K13 and 2K15.
In an interview from nearly 7 years ago, Kevin Durant gave us his tell-all on his experiences while playing 2K.
Kevin Durant says that he plays as LeBron James on 2K
Following his 2013-14 MVP season, KD was named the cover athlete for NBA 2K15. To promote the game, he went on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to discuss the latest installment in the 2K series.
During the conversation, Fallon asks Durant if he’s any good at the game. Without hesitation, Durant says, “I’m really good.” The two then indulge in some light-hearted competitive banter about who could beat who in the game. Fallon then decides to ask KD, “Who do you play as in 2K?” After much deliberation, the MVP responds with, “Alright, LeBron.”

This of course caused Jimmy and the audience to crack up as it’s well documented that Kevin Durant and LeBron James were formidable rivals, even 7 years ago. At that point in both of their careers, the two had already met in the Finals once, with LeBron’s Miami Heat taking care of Durant’s OKC in merely 5 games.
However, it was obvious that KD was next up. Fast-forward to the present day and the ‘Slim Reaper’ has bested James in the Finals twice already and have been named the All-Star captains for their respective conferences this season. A Finals matchup between Durant’s Nets and LeBron’s Lakers in 2021 is very much a possibility, reigniting a rivalry that spans nearly 10 years.
