“We have seen enough examples”: Toto Wolff seems to troll Ferrari for shambolic performances over the last decade despite their huge budgets.
Toto Wolff has spoken out on the budget cap introduced in F1 from this season, starting with $145million. The Mercedes boss believes success in the sport is not always about who spends the most money. The best case for this would be Ferrari, who did not win a single title the entire last decade.
“Performing in Formula 1 is not just about money. You can have the most money but not perform the way you should. We have seen enough examples of that in the past.”

Toto Wolff believes 2021 and 2022 car development should be balanced
With the regulation changes postponed to 2022, Mercedes are the favourites this season too. This is one of the reasons why the teams have one eye on their 2022 car. Toto Wolff believes a balance needs to be struck, with discussions on a regular basis.
“It’s a question we have to find a solution for every year. How do you balance the development time you still want to put into the current car with the time you want to use for next year’s car?”
“For 2022, that question becomes even more important because of the magnitude of the changes. There will be teams who will focus early on 2022 and others who will see great potential in this year’s World Championship and put their energy into it. For us, it will be crucial to find the right balance. That is a topic of discussion every week.”
