Shreyas Iyer to represent Lancashire: Mumbai batsman is all set to become the sixth Indian player to play for Lancashire.

India batsman Shreyas Iyer will represent Lancashire in the upcoming season of Royal London Cup 2021. The signing was announced on the club’s website making Iyer the sixth Indian player to play for Lancashire.

Iyer, 26, will reach Manchester on July 15 to follow the likes of Farokh Engineer, Murali Kartik, Dinesh Mongia, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly as the previous five Indian players to represent Lancashire.

Iyer, who is a part of India’s ODI and T20I squads, will only play in the One-Day tournament which will begin from July 22. Iyer’s month-long stay during the league phase will clash with India’s Test tour of England.

After playing the final match of the inaugural ICC World Test Championship, India are scheduled to play a five-match Test series against England in August-September. With India also slated to play a couple of first-class matches against India A before the Test series, there is a strong possibility of Iyer playing for India A after having acclimatized to the English conditions.

Speaking in a statement published on their website, Lancashire Director of Cricket Paul Allott termed Iyer as a “shining light” among the new generation batsmen and highlighted how Iyer’s presence will bolster their batting lineup especially with a lot of their first-choice names set to play The Hundred.

“Shreyas is one of the shining lights of a new generation of Indian batsman and a leader, and we’re delighted that an opportunity to bring him to Emirates Old Trafford has presented itself,” Allott said.

“With the expectation that we will be fielding a younger side in this year’s Royal London Cup due to the Hundred, it was important that we brought in a top-order batsman with experience at the highest level to enhance our prospects in the tournament.

“Shreyas has experience of captaining in an IPL final as well as playing in top level international fixtures, so his on-field skills, and ability to remain calm in high pressure situations, will serve our young squad well this summer.

“His current form against England has been hugely impressive and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to Lancashire Cricket and Emirates Old Trafford later this summer.”

In 50 white-ball outings at the highest level, Iyer’s 1,357 runs have come at an average of 36.67 and 111.96 including one century and 11 half-centuries.
