“You da real MVP”: When Kevin Durant gave the greatest NBA MVP acceptance speech of all time 7 years ago
Born and brought up in the DC area, Kevin Durant was the child of a single mother Wanda. He acknowledged her in the best possible way 7 years ago.
KD’s rise to basketball superstardom was something that one could argue was written in the stars. He reached a height of 6’0″ early in his teens – way back in his middle school days.
From there, he made a name for himself as one of the most effortless scorers on the national circuit. The McDonald’s All American selection and college recruitment to Texas A&M followed soon.
Durant was the #2 prospect from his high school class behind Greg Oden. Despite earning Gatorade National Player of the Year honors (he was the first freshman to ever win), Durant went 2nd in the 2007 NBA draft.
The Portland Trail Blazers would soon be kicking themselves for letting a sure thing like KD slip out of their hands. Durant became a 3-time NBA scoring 3 times in his first 5 seasons, also making his first NBA Finals en route.
Kevin Durant gives an impassioned MVP acceptance speech while thanking his mom
Nearly 2 years removed from his first Finals appearance, Kevin Durant was expected to be a landslide winner of the 2014 NBA MVP award. He’d set fire to the league with his 4th scoring title while leading the OKC Thunder to second seed in the West.
Durant’s 2013-14 season is comparable to some of the greatest offensive seasons in league history. It became clear after the halfway point that he would undoubtedly win his first MVP title over LeBron’s challenge. So when the time did come by, Durant had an all-time speech prepared to deliver.

“You wake me up in the middle of the night in the summer times, making me run up a hill, making me do pushups, screaming at me from the sidelines of my games at 8 or 9 years old.”
“We wasn’t supposed to be here. You made us believe. You kept us off the street. You put clothes on our backs, food on the table. When you didn’t eat, you made sure we ate. You went to sleep hungry. You sacrificed for us. You the real MVP.”
If you can keep the tears off your eyes at this point, are you even human?
