Major takeaways from the meeting between IPL team owners
The long-standing meeting between the different stake owners of the Indian Premier League ended in a fix. The owners could not solve the retention policy for Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals while discussing other several important issues surrounding the 11th season of the IPL.
Also in the meeting, there were top management representatives or owners of all the eight original teams spelling out their recommendations concerning next year’s IPL auction to the IPL governing council members in the presence of the executives and the Supreme-Court appointed Committee of Administrators.
“There were number of issues including number of players, salary cap of the players, the playing squad (size), and the total number of the teams. All these issues were discussed other then the venue for auction and the dates of auction and the inaugural ceremony. “I think in a fortnight the governing council will finalise the details.” IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla, who chaired the meeting, said after the meeting that lasted nearly two hours to Sportstar
Player retention:
The major discussion revolved around the player retention, which left the owners divided. Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings would return to the tournament, after the two-year ban. Apart from that, they also discussed to increase the playing team from eight currently, to a total of ten which includes the return of the two franchises.
Auction for the 2018 edition of the IPL is scheduled to take place in the month of January, amidst the confusion over the retention policy. If the retention policy is rejected, then the franchises would be allowed to pick any player from the lot. That would also mean that marquee players’ such as Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni would go back into the lot for the auction. The final decision, although would be given by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in about two weeks from now.
It would be left to observe if the franchises agree to the retention policy, or would they want all the players to go back into the lot for the franchises to start afresh.
