Delhi Daredevils must have faith and build their next few years around Rishabh Pant

Has there been any team that has under performed as much Delhi Daredevils have in the history of the IPL? I don’t think so, do you?

While many people will point to RCB, at least the boys from Bengaluru have reached three finals and a couple of semi finals during the last ten years. Delhi though, have been consistently poor despite possessing some really good cricketers in their ranks.

Delhi had a fantastic side during the first three years of the tournament, as they possessed the likes Sehwag, Gambhir, AB de Villers, Dilshan and Warner in their side.

After finishing at the top of the table in the 2009, they lost in the semi finals to eventual champions, Deccan Chargers, as Gilchrist played a sensational innings to take the game away from Delhi.

Since then, Delhi have struggled in the competition, as they tried a host of players with hardly any success. Last year’s Delhi side was a promising one, as Rahul Dravid and Paddy Upton decided to groom a team filled with promising youngsters.

The likes of Shreays Iyer, Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant formed the core of the side, as these three highly talented boys impressed everyone with their attacking flair.

Pant in particular was the talk of the town, as his eye catching displays with the bat won the hearts of everyone who watched him last season. His performances earned him a national team call-up, as Pant got his chance with Indian team a few months later.

Still only 20, Pant has been ear marked as MS Dhoni’s eventual successor in the Indian side, as his attacking stroke play and steady gloves behind the stumps makes him a very attractive prospect for the national team selectors.

It is therefore no wonder that that Delhi Daredevils management are looking to retain Pant, along with promising batsman Shreyas Iyer. With these two young and talented Indians in their ranks and the right recruitment, Delhi may finally have a good season this time around in the IPL.
