Mesut Ozil stayed at Arsenal because he feels loved by the club

Arsenal fans rejoiced when the club announced that Mesut Ozil had agreed upon a three-year contract extension with the club, as the German superstar ensured his elegant presence at the Emirates Stadium for a few more years to come.

When Arsenal first contacted Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez over a possible contract extension back in the summer of 2015, both players seemed keen on getting it done as quickly as possible, as the two superstars were happy to continue their careers at Arsenal.

But things quickly changed and by the end of last season, Arsenal faced the prospect of losing both their stars for nothing in one year’s time.

While the board wanted to cash in on the stars, Wenger wanted both Ozil and Sanchez to remain for their last year and hoped to convince them to continue with the club.

Things quickly deteriorated with Alexis though, as the Chilean’s inability to be a team player caused unrest in the dressing room.

While Sanchez was controversially sold to Manchester United in a swap deal with Mkhitaryan, Ozil agreed to sign an extension making him the highest paid player in the club’s history.

This is what Ozil said when asked about why he decided to stay at Arsenal,

“It feels really good,” he told Arsenal Player. “I’m really happy to sign here for such a big club like Arsenal. I’ve always said to the club that i’m happy here and now I’ve signed, I’m really happy.

“My team-mates and family have always supported me. I have a lot of goals here with the team, I want to reach those and I’m really happy.

“I love the city. Before I signed the contract, I spoke with my family about what the best decision was for me. At the end of the day, it was really easy for me to say ‘yes’ to the club. I’m here for more years and I hope we will win some titles with the team. I believe in that.”
