Porsche could enter Formula 1 in 2021, says Gerhard Berger
Formula One will be entering a new era post 2020, as the new engine regulations will kick in and Liberty Media will be able to shape the sport in the way it envisioned it ever since taking over the reigns.
The proposed regulations have caused quite a stir amongst the existing shareholders and will continue to do so until a middle ground is reached.
F1’s oldest team, Ferrari feels that Liberty is tinkering too much with the essence of Formula 1 and that ‘americanising’ formula 1 is not the way to go about it as it is a technical sport.
With Ferrari threatening to quit, reports have emerged that Porsche could be considering an entry into Formula 1 in 2021.
Gerhard Berger, the former Ferrari driver and Toro Rosso co-owner has said that Porsche are in fact weighing the opportunity to make an entry into Formula 1.
“Porsche is thinking about a Formula 1 entry for 2021,” said Berger as reported by German publication Auto Bild.
“They are just waiting for the new engine regulations, which should be published in May, and then will decide.” he added.
Porsche though will confirm only after the engine regulations are finalised later this year.
The German engine supplier would be coming in as an engine supplier and with Aston Martin too reportedly coming in as an engine supplier, F1 could have six engine suppliers from 2021(i.e if Ferrari decide to stay put).
Porsche opted out of WEC in 2017 and will be entering into the FIA Formula E championship from 2019.
If Porsche do decide to come in, Formula 1 could get really interesting from 2021.
