“Hopefully we’ll overtake them”: Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith confident of breaking Shane Warne & Mark Taylor’s record of most catches by a bowler-fielder duo in tests
Australia and West Indies will take on each other in the 2nd test of the 2-match series at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide. The match is an important one for both sides obviously, but the duo of Steve Smith and Nathan Lyon is set to break an Australian record in this match.
Nathan Lyon scalped 6 wickets in the last innings of the Perth test, and Steve Smith took three catches out of them. The duo of Smith and Lyon has combined for a total of 51 catches between them, and they have equalled the record of Shane Warne and Mark Taylor.
The individual form of both players has been great as well, Smith scored a brilliant double-century in the 1st innings of the first match, and Lyon is now the 8th highest wicket-taker in the history of test cricket.
Nathan Lyon and Steve Smith confident of breaking Shane Warne & Mark Taylor’s record
Ahead of the 2nd test, Nathan Lyon said that he and Smith are aware of the record of Mark Taylor and Shane Warne’s record of most catches as a bowler-fielder duo in Australian cricket. He revealed that Smith called him last night to say congratulations about the game.
Catches win matches and having a combination of a bowler and a fielder is certainly a great thing to watch. Even Lyon said that he is very proud of this achievement. Lyon said that Smith has been a part of 90-95% of his career which is certainly a very big achievement.
“Smithy sent me that message yesterday saying congrats, and we were now equal with Tubby (Taylor) and Warney,” Lyon told reporters in Adelaide today.
“When you see it like that, it’s pretty remarkable and something we’re both very proud of.”

Lyon insists that he stays confident when Smith is in the slips fielding for him as he knows that he will definitely grab the ball even if it is a tough chance. He believes that they are very confident about breaking the record set by Shane Warne and Mark Taylor.
“I’ve obviously got a lot of confidence in having Smithy there, and he gives me a lot of feedback on different paces, how the shape’s looking which are unbelievable cricket conversations to have,” Lyon added.
“So to be equal with Tubby and Warney at the moment, hopefully we’ll overtake them soon.”
