F1 to get a new points system

Formula 1 is going to come up with massive rule changes, which will kick in from 2021. While a rough blueprint has already been handed out to all teams, the details haven’t really been agreed upon.

The major paradigm shift will be with respect to the engine regulations, one that could massively impact the pecking order of the teams.

The top teams would want to keep hold of their supremacy, whilst the one’s in midfield would want rules that could help make the field a little more competitive.

The Strategy Group had a meeting on Thursday and one major change that is also being discussed is about awarding points to all 20 drivers, as confirmed Vijay Mallya.

“They’re considering whether the points system should go all the way down to 20th place, [meaning] every car scores a point if they finished the race,” Mallya said, as quoted by RaceFans.

“The bottom starts with one point and goes up.

“Or whether 10th should be extended down to 15th.” he added.

All F1 teams have to pay the FIA a certain amount of money based on the number of points they score.

“My comment was the fact that considering we have to pay for every point to the FIA that will have to be looked at in parallel.” Mallya said.

Currently, only the top 10 drivers are awarded points, with the winner receiving 25 points for a race win.

We’ll have to wait and see when the new rules will be finalised and how a new points system might affect the driver’s and constructor’s championship.
