Fernando Alonso confirms he would quit F1 by 2021
Fernando Alonso has been one of the most celebrated drivers of the sport, having won 2 world titles and currently chasing the ultimate motorsport dream; the triple crown.
However, the last few years in Formula 1 have been painful for the Spaniard, as McLaren haven’t been able to provide him the best possible car to challenge the top 3.
The ‘Honda excuse’ was the major factor in the last few years, but even with the Renault shift this year, it seems like McLaren have something inherently wrong with their car.
Vandoorne’s MCL33 has been termed as ‘undriveable’, as there is a terrible loss of downforce, despite regular changing of parts.
“I think he’s doing what he can,” Alonso said, talking about Vandoorne.
“Definitely the last two races it seems that car has some kind of performance issue, and there are clear signs on the data that there is less downforce on that car.
“We’ve been changing some parts, and we need to go deep into that investigation because with both cars close to the points is always a little bit easier.” he added.
Alonso was also quizzed about the newly proposed 18 inch tyres from 2021 and how they would affect the sport.
Alonso had a pretty blunt answer about it, saying that he won’t be around by then.
“I do not know. I will not be here anymore” said Alonso, speaking about the 18 inch tyres.

While it would have anyways been unfair to expect Alonso to compete at the highest level of the sport, one would imagine that if Schumacher could do it, Alonso should be able to do it as well.
