Twitter reacts as England beat India in a thrilling first test at Edgbaston
Virat Kohli’s terrific performances in both the innings took India close, but couldn’t see off the team to a historic victory.
India fell short of an extraordinary victory at Edgbaston as England held their nerves to win the first test of the five-test series. Sam Curran shined for the English team as the youngster scored a match-winning half century in the second innings after England were stranded at 87-7.
Virat Kohli scored a brilliant century in the first innings which pulled India back into the game, and led the run-chase in the second innings. However, he couldn’t see India off to the winning line as England emerged as winners by 31 runs.
Among bowlers, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma were the leading wicket-takers for India, with the latter picking up his 8th five-wicket haul in test cricket in the second innings.

Problem – India one down.
Solution – Pujara one down.— Ramesh Srivats (@rameshsrivats) August 4, 2018
No Asian team has won a Test at Edgbaston…the record stays intact. Bowling stood up. Kohli was exceptional. Catching and batting let India down. #EngvInd

Thrilling test match but England collectively were much better. Sam Curran’s contribution with the bat yesterday eventually turned out to be the difference. India will look for more contributions from the other batsmen #ENGvIND

The last time he went to England he failed miserably, but this time he has improved so much shows what an amazing player he is and also his dedication and determination. He proved every one wrong on this tour!!#viratkohli #ENGvsIND— Shoaib Akhtar (@shoaib100mph) August 3, 2018
Standing ovation for Kohli. 200 in the game and the feeling will be “We needed more”. The weight a champion carries!

If Virat Kohli had half the support Sachin Tendulkar had (Ganguly, Laxman, Dravid, Sehwag etc), Kohli would have won India many away Tests. #EngvInd

Well said Virat Kohli: ‘It’s lovely. It is the best format for me. We absolutely love Test cricket. People who watch it should love it if they understand the game. There is nothing better than testing yourself over 5 days against top-quality opposition’ 👏

Virat Kohli let down by the others as England prove they are marginally better and take the 1-0 lead. Plenty of areas to work on for India. Start with selecting a good XI and hold your catches. 🙂

Sam Curran is the Ben Stokes you can introduce to your mum. #ENGvIND

If Flintoff did what Sam Curran’s just done (in his second Test) they’d recycle it endlessly on Cricket’s Greatest and give him his own game show

Sam Curran gets MoM. Well played. The guy is 20. Playing his second TestI mean, when I was 20 I was finishing and exam early and running back home to see Laxman and Dravid bat
