Paul Pogba scores first Premier League goal of the new season

The French midfielder opened the goalscoring for Manchester United in the season’s curtain-raiser.

Paul Pogba was named the Manchester United captain for their opening fixture against Leicester City. And merely two minutes into the match, he became the first goal-scorer of the Premier League. This was also the fastest goal ever scored by Manchester United in their opening league fixture.

The French midfielder was a surprise starter, let alone the skipper of the side. He started training on Monday and was doubtful to feature in the game today. The Frenchman had only 25-day break since the World Cup final last month. But as the game began, he led Manchester United attacks and made key passes penetrating the Leceister defence.

Manchester United received a penalty after Daniel Amartey’s handball, and Pogba coolly converted it to give United the lead.

Manchester United’s summer signing Fred also made his Premier League debut for the club, and looked solid in the midfield. Andreas Pereira also received his first Premier League start of the career on the brink of impressive performances in the midfield.

Bailly and Lindelof started in central defence, whereas Luke Shaw finally won the confidence of Jose Mourinho after the left-back featured in pre-season games for the club. Matteo Darmian featured as another full-back in the absence of Antonio Valencia.
