“Do you want to appeal to corporate America?”: Michael Jordan, Who Was Ridiculed by Charles Barkley, Once Scolded The Suns Legend Over Garish Outfit
NBA legends Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley have been close friends for decades, sharing a deep bond that transcends basketball. However, like any relationship, theirs has had its ups and downs over the years. One of the most notable incidents occurred when Barkley ridiculed Jordan on air about his tenure with the Washington Wizards. Barkley was working as a commentator at the time.
This caused a rift in their friendship. However, it wasn’t the first time that Jordan had expressed his disappointment in Barkley.
The bond between Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley
Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley have been long-time friends, both on and off the basketball court. The two entered the league together in the 1984 NBA draft. They quickly developed a strong bond as they faced off against each other multiple times throughout their careers.
Early on in their careers, Jordan took Barkley under his wing, providing him with guidance and advice on how to develop his game. Jordan recognized Barkley’s talent and potential, and he wanted to help him grow into the best player he could be.
However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing between the two friends. There were times when Jordan had to call Barkley out for his action. One notable instance was when Barkley showed up to a game wearing a garish outfit. Jordan pulled him aside and told him that he needed to dress more professionally, as it reflected poorly on the league and their team.
“Are you trying to look like a basketball player or do you want to appeal to corporate America?” scolded Jordan.
Despite their occasional disagreements, Jordan and Barkley remained close friends and supportive of each other’s careers. They both went on to become basketball legends, with Jordan winning six NBA championships and Barkley being named one of the 50 greatest players in NBA history.
When the bond was tested
Their friendship was tested in the early 2000s, however, when Barkley used his platform as a sports analyst to criticize Jordan’s management of the Washington Wizards. Barkley was vocal in his criticism, calling Jordan’s tenure with the team a failure and questioning his ability to lead a team from the front office.
Jordan was understandably hurt by Barkley’s comments, and their friendship was strained for several years as a result. However, the two eventually reconciled, and they remain two of the most iconic figures in basketball history.
