Jose Mourinho on De Gea’s contract: ‘We’ll have good news’

‘Sooner or later, we’ll have good news,’ said Jose Mourinho on De Gea’s contract at Manchester United.

Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid in the last few years. The Spaniard was close to sealing a move back to his motherland on deadline day in the summer of 2015. However, a fax machine issue in the Spanish capital stalled the move. Madrid eventually signed Thibaut Courtois this summer all but putting off a move for De Gea this summer.

The Red Devils are now keen on getting things sorted with their shot stopper and preventing him from any foreign interest with a contract on the table already in place. The signing was expected to happen earlier in August after the Golden Glove 2017/18 winner returned from international duty but a few legal formalities delayed the signing. Now, Jose Mourinho has broken the silence about De Gea’s extension and signaled that it will happen soon.

“I don’t belong in the process of discussing deals with the players and negotiations with agents,” said the Portuguese tactician. “I never did that, it’s something that I don’t even like to do. I would be a bad negotiator.

“I would give everything to the players! So I don’t belong to that. I just know that everything is in movement and hopefully sooner than later we’ll have good news.”

The rumour mill has it that the 26 year old will sign an extension that will make him one of the Premier League’s top wage earners, alongside the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba at roughly 350,000 pounds per week. De Gea has been one of United’s best players in recent years and deserves the significant pay rise.

Unfortunately, De Gea was tumultuous since the World Cup and has conceded 7 goals in 4 Premier League matches so far with his solo clean sheet coming against Burnley last Sunday. United dispatched the Clarets by a 2-0 score line courtesy of Lukaku’s brace. The Red Devils now have an international break of two weeks to get things sorted before travelling to the Vicarage Road to take on Watford who have a 100% record in 4 Premier League outings.
