“How Is There Even a Discussion”: F1 Fans Flabbergasted After Lewis Hamilton’s Rookie Year Gets Compared to Oscar Piastri
Oscar Piastri has had a great start to his F1 career with McLaren. The 22-year-old is enjoying one of the best rookie years in recent history, having secured two podiums and a sprint victory so far. Given the same, a report from Motorsport Magazine compares Piastri’s rookie year to that of Lewis Hamilton, and it has the fans raging with anger and frustration.
In 2007, a rookie, Hamilton, took the F1 world by storm, surpassing everyone’s expectations. In the first 17 races of the season, the Briton won five and took to the podium on a further seven occasions to announce the arrival of one of the most exciting talents on the grid. By comparison, Piastri has secured two podium finishes and a sprint win so far.
The seven-time world champion scored 110 points in his rookie year, but with a revamped points system, Piastri sits only 27 points away from equaling the record. However, none of this is convincing enough for the fans, who believe it is wrong to compare the two rookie years.
Fans red with anger after Lewis Hamilton-Oscar Piastri comparison
In view of the report by Motorsport Magazine, fans took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their anger and dissatisfaction. Hamilton fans were furious to see a report comparing two seasons with an entirely different points system being unfairly compared.
Oscar has had a great rookie season so far but how is there even a discussion between a driver losing out on the title by 1 point whilst having the defending 2-time world champion as his teammate, and a driver who’s currently 53 points behind Lando Norris https://t.co/egCvNEaXET

Lewis Hamilton’s stunning 2007 rookie season :
– 2nd in the championship
– lost the title by 1 point
– beat his teammate (2x WDC)
– 4 wins (tied for #2)
– 6 pole positions (tied for #1)
– 12 podiums (tied for #1)No matter what F1 media tells you, nobody is beating this. pic.twitter.com/xSbScK9APM

Yeah they’re actually insane lmao they’re comparing Oscar Piastri who, mind you, is very good, to Lewis Hamilton who lost the championship battle by 1 point while beating his teammate Fernando Alonso at his arguable peak lol
Who’s hiring these folks seriously, have they watched…

If we convert Hamilton‘s points from his first 17 races in his rookie year, the Briton’s tally comes to a whopping 253 points. In comparison, Piastri only has 83. While the 38-year-old would have won by a landslide margin, there is no denying that Piastri has generated a lot of buzz with his arrival at McLaren.
Piastri heading towards potential greatness?
Following Daniel Ricciardo’s axing, Alpine and McLaren battled to secure the duties of Oscar Piastri, with the latter emerging successful in the chase. Despite not seeing the Chequered Flag in his debut race, Piastri endured and is now one of the most exciting talents out on the grid. Driving alongside Lando Norris, Piastri has brought new energy within the McLaren garage while also pushing Norris in the car, which was something Ricciardo could not do often.
The first rookie to lead an F1 race in the last 10 years
The first rookie to stand on the podium in the last 6 years
The first rookie to take pole in a sprint race ⚡️We need to talk about Oscar Piastri! pic.twitter.com/KYP2d6ksW2

Following impressive driving in Japan and Qatar, there is little doubt that greatness lies in the Australian’s future. With only five races to go in the season, Piastri’s rookie season is all but over. Given how impressive he has been so far and the incredible strides made by McLaren in the development of their car, the latest expectation from him and Norris would be to take down Red Bull from the top.
