Dale Earnhardt Jr. Latest to Call Out NASCAR’s “Getting Crazy” Attempts
Not long after NASCAR released next year’s Cup schedule, one thing began sticking out, and not for the right reasons. It was the set of racetracks in the Round of 16. Atlanta, Watkins Glen, and Bristol. This was something that didn’t sit well with a few big names, particularly the addition of a superspeedway in the playoffs apart from Talladega. Recently, Dale Earnhardt Jr. too reacted to this subject.
The former driver took the mic on his podcast show to voice out a suggestion to the decision-makers in NASCAR regarding this part of the schedule. Along with that, Junior also expressed his dislike of Phoenix being the championship race yet again, reminiscing about another racetrack that he felt was perfect for the penultimate race of the season.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants to caution NASCAR against ‘crazy rounds’
Speaking about the Atlanta, Watkins Glen, and Bristol set of races in next year’s schedule, Junior deemed it a “crazy round”, sharing some advice for NASCAR. “I would caution NASCAR, whoever it is that is making these decisions for these rounds, I would caution them to have some purity. We’ve got some crazy races that can go into these rounds,” he said.
“A Talladega or a Daytona in any round is a wild idea. But Atlanta, Watkins Glen, and Bristol, that’s like a lot happening in one moment. I would caution them not to get too wild because the end result could be a fluke-ish sort of vibe.”
Earnhardt claimed he understands that NASCAR wants to “make moments”, that he agrees with that notion too. But the rounds of races in the playoffs, “they’re getting crazy,” he attested.
Junior makes the case for Homestead
As for Phoenix retaining it’s title as next year’s championship race for the fourth-straight season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. had some pretty strong opinions. “I don’t know what’s that. I love Phoenix. I love going there. I think everybody misses Homestead,” he said.
Earnhardt claimed Homestead being the last race of the year felt right. “What is synonymous with finishing the year is that Florida sunset. It was like, the vibe at the racetrack and everything about it, it was like clockwork, it felt right, it matched, and all those beautiful sunsets and the nice warm weather,” he described.
The Hall of Famer added that there are not many bad things he can say about Homestead’s case for the championship race apart from the fact that it’s “in the far, far corners of the country,” that it’s not central, to which Kelley Earnhardt reminded her brother that neither is Phoenix, which again reminded Junior of one more thing he doesn’t like about that racetrack.
